The demise of Death Star 10188?

are you only interested in ordering directly from lego? I googled it and looks like it's available from a few different online retailers. Looks like most have marked up the price by at least $100. Man the price of lego has changed since I last looked at collecting.

I spoke to Lego S&H about a week ago when it was out of stock and asked if it was discontinued and they said no, they were still being produced.

ENewuman600 - I've merged both of your topics with this one, as they're all basically about the same thing. There's really no need for three identical topics floating around. I was playing around the Lego sight and I see that the Death Star is currently listed as:
Backorders Accepted... expected ship Feb 12

Isn't this normally what happens when an Item is about to be discontinued? I see that it's roughly at the end of the normal 2 year life cycle, so I'm assuming that it will be discontinued, so I'm gonna have to bite the bullet, and bust out the charge card I think... I was hoping to get a % discount sooner or later, but I guess that's wishful thinking... anyone happen to know any other discount than the brickset $5 off? =) Guess I will use some lego points to cushion some of the blow...

Figured I would give the heads up for any of you like me, hoping and praying for a discount on it before buying.

Back orders don't necessary mean anything other than the item is currently not in stock at the warehouse. A lot of items go on back order from time to time. But like you said, the death star has been around a long time, so who knows.

I bit the bullet and bought one during black friday. I was hoping that it would go for 50% off like they did for the UCS falcon. The box is still being displayed at many Lego stores. This makes me believe that it's still going to be around. For how long, I don't know.

Maybe you are right. I was checking amazon, target and toysrus...and none of them have it in stock. I think if the lego have more, they should have already sent them by now like hogwarts castle (none of them had in stock during the holidays and now all of them have it).

That is another reason I've been leaning toward that this is ending it's life cycle. While I'm sure they make a TON of money off each set, I'm sure they don't move the item as much as the other sets... they've also been discontinuing a few of the "older" "bigger" sets lately it seems. I've seen it on Target and TRU websites, but never available for shipping (not sure if they get ordered too fast or that TRU doesn't wanna bone up the expensive shipping since its almost guaranteed they will cover the shipping over $100.)

I've never been in a non-Lego store and seen them actually carry a Death Star in stock (even though websites say it's available in store). Guess I will just have to bite my lip and take it like a man. So not happy about that.. oh well, at least it's a ton of Lego Points...

So.. after ordering the Catalog about 4 times, I finally received my January 2011 Catelog... and in the Star Wars section, the Death Star is advertised.... Now it indicates that prices are only good through mid Feb, but the fact that the Death Star is being promoted here has me really confused as to if they are advertising to get rid of the final stock, or if they advertise because they want to do another production run...

Looks like I will be calling Lego when I get off work tonight.

I'm in the same boat... want this thing... just waiting waiting waiting for a 10% off even sale =) I don't think it's gonna happen. As stated before, it's nearing its 2 year life cycle, and odds are even though the set is great, they will not produce it anymore. (Can't be UCS if they produce it forever). I'm going to err on the side of caution on this one and put my order in and tell myself "Better $400 now than $1000 on ebay later." Now i will definately buy another one if it ever goes on sale before discontinue, and then resell the $400 one after... this one will easily crack 1k within a year or so... yes the MF is "cooler", but with more playability and MANY more minifigs, its worth it. Yes you can get the same minifigs elsewhere... but the combination of the set and minis is just too great a value to keep the price under the MF.... plus there are multiple version of the MF... which keeps its price from going higher.

It is true that typically a LEGO set will stay on the market for availability between one and a half to two years. Currently this item is on back order on our website and orders will be fulfilled on 02/17/2011. The Death Star is an iconic LEGO set and I believe that it should be around for a little while longer, but I would hate for you to not get it because you waited too long. I hope that you are able to get the Death Star before it is discontinued!

"after it finishes its full 2 year run (by mid summer), this set will no longer be offered... and don't expect any discounts because even non Lego fans buy this one."

Maybe not through LEGO S@H or their B&Ms, but you can find discounts elsewhere.

Assuming they restock, Target is probably a good bet, as you can score discounts there through other sources (e.g., AAA membership or Rewards Runner) and often combine those with Target's RED card discount and coupons.

The AAA (10%) and RED card (5%) discounts alone could save you $58 (14.5%).
