I recently just bought the last 10 Ninjago they had... Now my plan is to wait until the lovely after-Easter clearance comes, and I will return the polys and rebuy them for $0.75 each or whatever they marked down to.
In Queens the SW polybags are the first to go. Up by me, the Ninjago were the first to go.
can't you get a price adjustment instead of returning it?

That is basically what I will be doing. Some stores don't "price match" their own sales, so they force you to return and rebuy.
Here is my theory on why I think they sometimes try to force you to return/rebuy:
I think they try to force this method because they think if you have to wait 3-4 days for the charge to be returned to your credit card, and have to purchase again, they will tie up your whole credit line, and therefore you won't want to do it.
I have mixed feelings about new releases: I can't wait to see and get the new sets... but I can't figure out where I'm gonna put them or store them.

I've only done price adjustment at TRU when they have BOGO50. I'll try that with Target but most of the time, polybags are gone by the time clearance hit. By the time it hits 30% off, everything is gone. Rarely do you see 50% or 75% off.

I managed to grab a bunch of the 30071 Toy Story Army Man/Jeep bags for $0.99 a while back, so it happens, but like you said - rarely.

Target return policy is such that seasonal items are refunded on the last selling price. In theory, if they enforce this policy, you wouldn't get any cash adjustment by return and repurchase. Of course most target staff are oblivious of this policy. Ymmv if you plan to return/repurchase seasonal items.

In terms of when Target usually puts seasonal items on discount, is it the week before the holiday, the day before, the day of, the day after? I realize it may vary from store to store, but I don't have a Target near me so it's a bit of planning to get there.

In my experience most seasonal items go 50% off the day after, then 75% several days to a week or so after Lego sets rarely last to 75% near me but my wife did find a police boat polybag for a $1 some time after christmas.

I finally grabbed one of the Ninjago polybag sets on Friday. It was the only one on the shelf.

I went by one Target yesterday and there are only about 6-8 of each of the polybag sets left...it seems unlikely they will last to the clearance. It should go 50% on Monday the 25th.

Ah. I should have thought of that before putting together my little Atlantis mini sub guy. Hmm, maybe I'll get the other polybags if they're that cheap. I noticed at my Target that there is a healthy amount of firemen, a fair amount of AT-STs and the Ninjago sets are almost all gone.

There's a whole bin of AT-STs here in Connecticut that haven't been touched. I haven't seen any of the Ninjago polys at all. There's a healthy amount now of the Toy Story army man, Fire helicopter, and Atlantis mini sub at the checkouts.

Wow, really? Can anyone say if they have done this before (going back during clearance and getting the discounted price)? I feel like if I tried that it would go wrong or something. For instance, I can't imagine going back with some plastic eggs I bought but didn't use and try to get half off on them.

I too am nervous about asking to return and rebuy an item that was seasonal and going from full to 1/2 price. If they are available at 50% off I have bought new discounted ones and then later returned the ones I bought at full price. With a 90 day return policy that is feasible. I already have a few of each so I don't really need more. Although I didn't have an issue w/ asking Kmart to return/rebuy at the lower price today. I don't know why I feel differently at Target w/ the Seasonal Stuff, maybe b/c I'm only saving $1.49 each and it isn't worth the embarassment of being turned down for a few bucks.

Eh, the way I see it is this: They have a return policy for a reason. If i purchase an item and have a receipt, regardless of when and what, I should be able to get my money back. If they had the item cheaper, i could buy then return the more expensive one. Either way it's pretty much the same thing.... I see it like this: They chose to lower the price on the item, they just ran out. By me returning the item at full price, they then have 'stock' again that SOMEONE is gonna buy at that price, so might as well be me.
I don't consider them 'seasonal' even though Target places them there.... so maybe that's why I don't feel bad about it.

You are right, it is the same thing. For me the buying at the cheaper price and returning the full priced seems less embarrassing for me personally. But it is the same as going to the register w/ the receipt from your other purchase and asking for a price adjustment or return/rebuy.
And it's true that it is Target's own fault for making them "seasonal". I'm glad that they carry them though.
